How Sudoku Difficulty Works: From Level 1 to 100
Here is a fact that surprises most players: a Sudoku with 26 given numbers can be far harder than one with 22. The count of blank cells barely matters. What sets the difficulty is which solving techniques the puzzle forces you to use before it will give up a single digit.
Two grids can start with the same number of clues and live in completely different worlds — one solved by gentle scanning, the other demanding a chain of eliminations you have to hunt for. Understanding what actually changes as difficulty climbs makes the climb far less mysterious.
Difficulty is the hardest technique required
A puzzle is rated by the most advanced technique you must apply to solve it by logic. If naked and hidden singles alone finish it, it is easy. If you cannot progress without pointing pairs or box/line reduction, it is intermediate. If it needs an X-wing or harder, it is expert. A grader finds the simplest complete solving path and rates the puzzle by the toughest step on that path.
The beginner band
At the bottom, every move is a naked single (a cell with one option) or a hidden single (a digit with one home in a unit). You can solve these by scanning alone, with no candidate bookkeeping. This is where you build the pattern recognition that everything else stands on.
The intermediate climb
In the middle, scanning stops being enough. You start needing candidate marks and elimination techniques — pointing pairs, box/line reduction, and naked or hidden pairs and triples. None of these place a digit directly; they remove candidates until a single appears. The skill being tested is patience: working the eliminations instead of guessing.
The expert tier
At the top sit techniques like the X-wing, where a digit locked into the same two columns across two rows lets you eliminate it elsewhere in those columns. These patterns are rarer, harder to spot, and often chain together. A genuine expert puzzle has at least one point where nothing but an advanced technique will move it forward.
Why the givens-count myth persists
It is tempting to assume fewer clues means harder, because a near-empty grid looks intimidating. But a puzzle with very few givens can still be solved by singles if the clues are well placed, while a fuller grid can hide a position that demands an X-wing. Setters control difficulty through clue placement and symmetry, not raw count. Judge a puzzle by the logic it forces, not by how empty it looks.
How Sukuro grades and the 1–100 ladder

Difficulty is a path, not a wall
Because a rating reflects the single hardest technique on the solving path, a higher level is not uniformly harder — most of the board still falls to ordinary singles, with just one or two moments that demand the tougher move. That is encouraging: you do not need to master every advanced pattern to climb the ladder, only to add the next technique to your toolkit. Each new method you learn quietly raises the ceiling of puzzles you can finish without ever guessing.
